“MY DRESS MY CHOICE”

Touts in Nairobi recently stripped a woman naked for wearing a miniskirt. The argument was that to be taught a lesson for been skimpily dressed. The incident has reawakened memories of the martial law that banned women from wearing trousers, miniskirts and short dresses. With everyone in women’s fashion characterised by short dresses and tight trousers I sought the opinion from the youth on who should dictate a woman’s dress code!

It is undignified and inhumane to undress anyone over what you as individual term as indecency. I think it should be left to each woman to should decide what she wants to wear without being restricted by so many conditions. Additionally ,a woman’s dress code should not be based on what people want her to wear but it should be what she is comfortable in. Am yet to hear of any man that has been undressed for walking around bare chested,so they should let women be.

Everyone not just women, has a right to choose whatever they want to wear without supervision. However this does not mean that women should be skimpily dressed in the name of fashion. The reason why there is so much focus on what a woman is wearing is because it reflects on her character. That is why some men take upon themselves to dictate what their wives or girlfriends should wear in public places especially if he feels that she may be revealing too much. Its all right to be trendy but its more important to be descent.

My dress is my choice but I advocate for decency from a man’s point of view, which means sometimes less is not more. Its the pride of say man when his woman is the envy of many because she is not only beautiful but presents herself smartly dressed. That said, both women and men should remember the decency and deprivation all start in the mind. Tame that and we will not see such sad cases of humiliation.

I support the premise that”my dress is my choice.” having someone dictate my dress code is akin to me trying to tell someone else how to live his or her life. A person who feels its okay to strip a woman based on whatever grounds is immoral and perverted. Provided a woman dresses according to her age, stage in life and the called for occasion, then I have no problem with the choice of her wardrobe!!
